Christmas Hampers

We’re really excited to launch our Belfrey Christmas Hampers, and this year, we’re continuing on last year’s success by giving to the families and individuals supported by our Safe Families and CAP ministries, as well as giving to the wider community in York via Besom.

We’re asking everyone to consider very carefully whether they are able to deliver their own hampers this year, as sadly we may not be able to accept your offer if you can’t. Besom are collaborating with No One Left Behind this year, encouraging churches to use hampers as a starting point to build relationships with those in need in their areas. If you’re giving as a Belfrey Group, we are asking the Belfrey Group leaders to make the delivery, but if this is an issue, please let Claire Treherne know.

What do we put in our hamper? (with thanks to Besom for the answers)

Christmas Food: Yule log, Christmas sweets, chocolate, stuffing mix, spiced tea, Christmas biscuits, mince pies, Christmas puddings, any other seasonal treats. (Please ensure that all food items are alcohol-free — especially mince pies and Christmas puddings, which often contain alcohol).

Everyday Food: Pasta, pasta sauce, rice, soup, crisps, biscuits etc.

Festive Touches: Fairy lights, tinsel, baubles, crackers, a tablecloth, Christmas decoration, a small tree. A Christmas card from you is a nice personal touch too.

Gifts and Essentials: Toys for children, hats, scarves, gloves, new towels, toiletries, a family game, stationery, gift packs, socks — or simply anything you would love to find in your own Christmas stocking.

Flyers or Information: If you have flyers for Christmas events or services running at your church, definitely add them in!

Important note:

The recipients of our hampers have often known a lifetime of “second best.” We believe that everyone deserves to receive something truly special, whatever their circumstances, because each person is equally loved and valued by God. For this reason, we ask that you please avoid including items from “value” ranges or anything sample sized or obvious freebies from somewhere. If you’re able, please consider choosing Fairtrade or luxury items — a small gesture that can make someone feel deeply seen, loved, and valued this Christmas.

Important note2:

Please be patient when waiting for your recipient’s name and address. It’s a busy time of year for Besom and Belfrey Love Your Neighbour. We’ll let you know the details as soon as we can but we may need to wait for references.

Common questions

  • Should I wrap the presents in my hamper?

This is up to you. If the family you’re making for has children, perhaps ask the parent beforehand what they would prefer. Families in the past have used the gifts for presents from Santa.

  • When can I deliver my hamper?

Whenever works for you and the recipient. Please arrange with them directly beforehand.

  • What box should I use?

It's great to use something useful to pack your hampers into, for example a washing basket, large gift bag, basket or storage box. You could also use a wrapped cardboard box.

  • Can I put second hand items in the hamper?

Yes, you can. Food items must be new and unopened. Other items should be in really good condition (i.e. a gift youwould be happy to receive yourself). Many recipients have known a lifetime of “second-best” - this is a great opportunity to show them how much God loves them.

  • Can I put handmade items in the hamper?

Yes you can, but please avoid home cooked food and baked goods.

  • Can I put fresh food in the hamper?

You can, but please make sure all the food is in date before you deliver it. For this reason, it might be simpler to pack with non-perishables.

Important Reminder: No Alcohol

Please do not put alcohol or items with alcohol in. Check Christmas puddings and mince pies especially. We do not know the background of everyone referred to us. We want to avoid giving someone anything close to alcohol in case they struggle with or have struggled with alcohol in the past.
