Dear Church Family
It was great having Paul Harcourt, National Leader of New Wine with us last Sunday and Monday, at our Equip Leaders Day. Paul reminded us that the heart of God is most beautifully seen on Good Friday - as Jesus hung on the cross, sacrificing himself to win our forgiveness and freedom. The bible offers a number of pictures to help us understand the cross, but the most dominant is that of sacrifice.
The sacrifice of the cross is simple, but oh so profound. Christ died in our place. In mine, and yours. And that's why next week - Holy Week - we have short services in St Michael le Belfrey Church (Mon-Thurs at 7pm) to help us consider and be thankful for the sacrifice that God went through for us. Led by various Belfrey Groups, these will include bible readings, some music and time for prayer and reflection. The Thursday will include Foot Washing and Holy Communion.
Easter weekend is a special time for us as followers of Jesus. If you're in York, do join us at one of our services on Good Friday, welcome guests at our cafe on Easter Saturday and come and celebrate on Easter morning the remarkable and joyful news that Christ is risen! The fact that Christ is risen means he's alive and present and real. We don't just worship a dead man, but One who is with us, for us, and can be known and experienced. As we encounter him again this Easter may the Lord give us many opportunities to show and tell of his love to the many around us who are far from him. He longs to draw close - and wants to use us to be his ambassadors. What an honour!
So as we approach Easter, I invite you to pray this prayer with me:
Come Holy Spirit, and renew us in our Easter faith! Revive our city, our region and our nation. And may Jesus Christ - the One who was once dead but now is alive - be known and experienced by many this Easter-time. Amen.
