Dear Church Family
What a cold and snowy week it's been! It's at times like this that so often we see people helping each other. Practical acts of kindness take place, with people watching out for the frail and elderly, essential care journeys are shared and care, concern and love is shown in tangible and real ways. I know many of us have been on the phone to others, asking if they are ok or if there's anything we can do to help. Thank you. This is church in action. Church showing love.
Love is supposed to be like this. In the Bible love is always a doing word. It always involves action. It's great to feel love but so much more important to show love. One of my favourite bible passages on love, in Romans 12:9-16 is all about this. It's all about showing love by doing good, honouring others, by keeping our spiritual zeal, by faithfully praying, by sharing with those in need, by praticising hospitality, and so the list goes on...
Thank you to you - people of The Belfrey - for all the love you show and practically demonstrate day by day and week by week. Of course I don't see it all but what I do see and hear about is an honour to behold.
Sometimes we feel like we run out of love to give. Or that we are less able, due to health or age or circumstances, to share love as we once did. God knows this. What's important is to do what we can. And to realise that the love we share in the end comes from God, not us. That's why it's good to be reminded of our need for the Holy Spirit. He is the Spirit of love (Galatians 5:22; 1 Corinthians 13). He is the Spirit who empowers us to love in very practical ways. So ask him to do so again. Today. This week. And then ask him, who can I show love to today? What can I do? And then be ready too for the Lord to bring you opportunities to show love.
