Dear Church Family
I hope you're enjoying our series this term on Sundays, looking at Bible Reading. We're covering some basic and important things about reading the Bible. In the coming weeks we'll be looking in more detail about how we respond to God's Word and, importantly, how we practically get the Bible into our hearts and minds, so we can live out its message. Last Sunday the theme was 'Training in the Word of God.' If you weren't at The6 you'll have missed that sermon (as it wasn't covered at 9am or XI because of the York Marathon). If you want to catch up and hear it, you can listen online by clicking here.
Toward the end of that sermon, I highlighted four resources to help us train well in reading the Bible, which are all available in the church Narthex at our bookstall. These are:
- Eugene Peterson's 'Eat this Book.' An excellent book on digesting God's Word and letting it shape our lives.
- Gordon Fee & Douglas Stuart's 'How to Read the Bible for all its Worth.' Very helpful on how to study the Bible.
- Matthew Porter's 'A-Z of Discipleship.' More simple, picking up some of the big Bible themes, with over 650 Bible references
at the back, for those who want to follow up and go deeper.
- Brogan Hume's '14 Days.' A new booklet written by Brogan (our wonderful Student Worker!), particularly useful for someone
just starting to follow Jesus. We suggest you purchase two (2 for 2.50) - one for you and one to give away. You could even
suggest to the person you give it to that you both read the same thing every day and then meet to talk about it.
We want to provide books and other resources in St Michael le Belfrey Church which are a real help to our church members and visitors too, to equip us for discipleship and mission. So please do make use of our Bookstall, and if there are things that would help you that we're not yet providing, please do let Cathryn Fergie know.
