Dear Church Family
Since I last wrote my Friday Message last week, two great saints have gone to be with the Lord.
Rev Derek Wooldridge fell whilst out prayer-walking last weekend and sustained a knock on his head, resulting in his death the following day. Anne and his family were with him and they are now very much in our prayers as they mourn his loss. Derek was partly responsible for getting David Watson to come to York in the 1960's. He was later Vicar of St Paul's Holgate for 29 years and has been a part of our church since his retirement in 2000. He led our Wednesday lunchtime service for several years and was also involved in York Chinese Church. He was especially passionate about telling young people about Jesus and he led annual youth camps for decades.
In addition, our longest standing church-member, Peter Gibson, died peacefully in his sleep last Sunday morning. Peter was our Warden Emeritus in recognition of his many years of sterling service to St Michael le Belfrey where he worshipped for his whole life. He was Superintendent of York Glaziers' Trust and worked on every window in York Minster during his long and illustrious career there which began in 1945. He travelled all over the world lecturing on the conservation of medieval stained glass.
Peter's funeral will take place on Tuesday 6th December at 11am in St Michael le Belfrey Church, followed by lunch in the Chapter House of York Minster.
A Service of Thanksgiving for Derek's life will take place on Saturday 10th December at 1pm in St Michael le Belfrey Church, followed by tea at Central Methodist Church on St Saviourgate.
Derek and Peter are now experiencing the fulness of God's kingdom, in heaven. During their lives, they both had a great love for people and sought to live in the service of Christ - to see his kingdom come here on earth, in the city of York and beyond. They will both be missed. And I, like so many, feel it's a great privilege to have known them.
