As a church we have 4 strategic emphases. Making Disciples, Nurturing Disciples, Training Leaders and Planting Churches. Planting churches is an area we are particularly excited to develop so we are pleased to announce that our curate, Ben Doolan, has been invited to plant and lead a church by the Bishops of Newcastle and Berwick in the Diocese of Newcastle.
This 'Resource Church’ will be based in the centre of Newcastle, working alongside the Cathedral and other local churches to engage particularly with students, young people, the business community and those in need. The Belfrey is excited to send a team to help start and develop this new initiative that will serveGod's Transformation of the North. It is one of the initiatives that the Diocese of Newcastle identified two years ago as part of its strategy ‘growing church bringing hope’.
"The congregation of St Michael le Belfrey are thrilled to be sending Rev’d Ben Doolan and a team to support this exciting new initiative in Newcastle. Ben is a gifted people gatherer with an infectious faith and a passion to be serving God's Transformation of the North." Revd Matthew Porter, Vicar, The Belfrey
“It is wonderful to be able to welcome Ben into the Diocese, and to see him take on this very significant role. Ben brings a wealth of experience both from his work at St Michael le Belfrey and in the leadership team of New Wine and I look forward to him establishing and developing this exciting new initiative. This is great news for Newcastle, and great news for our Diocese" Rt Revd Christine Hardman, Bishop of Newcastle
“As part of the New Wine family, Ben and Ellie are committed to building a local church that serves its local community. They are infectious in their love for Jesus, and they’ve got big hearts for helping people from every background discover God’s love for themselves.” Paul Harcourt, National Leader of New Wine
Our vision for 2018 is 'Overflow' and as part of that Matthew outlined the desire and hope to send a team to plant a church in the North of England. This is an incredible opportunity for our church to resource and serve our region.
Newcastle is an exciting city with a large number of students, young families and young adults. It is the capital of the North East and a strategic location for a resource church. We are excited that The Belfrey is going to be serving God's Transformation of the North in this way and we can't wait to see what God does through Ben, Ellie and the team that we send.
I am delighted we are able to move forward with the establishment of a Resource Church in Newcastle and that Rev’d Ben Doolan has accepted the appointment as leader of this project. Ben brings lots of experience and wisdom from his work and a great track record of working with others in the Dioceses and networks of which he has been part in York and Sheffield.” Rt Revd Mark Tanner, Bishop of Berwick
Please be praying for Ben and Ellie as they look to plant and lead this exciting Resource Church with a team from The Belfrey. They will be staying with us at The Belfrey until January 2019 when they will move to Newcastle to prepare to launch the church in Autumn 2019.
