Dear Church Family
This Wednesday marks the start of Lent. In this 40 day period of preparation for the great feast of Easter, I'd like to encourage us all to use the time to examine our hearts and pray for overflow. You might like to listen again online to some of the sermons preached in January about overflow, and/or watch the short film I made, and/or read the overflow booklet again. As we think about overflow, let's be prayerfully seeking God and asking these 4 questions:
1) am I regularly asking to be filled to overflow with the water of God's Spirit (John 7:38-39)?
2) how is the Holy Spirit in me flowing out and positively impacting others around me, at home, work, etc (Luke 6:38; Philippians 2:4; Matthew 10:8)?
3) how can I help my small group be more of a community of overflow in the coming months (Matthew 5:16)?
4) how can I help our church be more of a church of overflow in the coming months (Acts 11:20-21)?
As we're learning to be disciples who give, pray and fast (see Matthew 6:2,5,16) you might also like to set aside a day each week to fast in Lent. You could fast from sunset to sundown or maybe miss a meal at some point during day in order to let your body be hungry and turn that hunger into hunger for the Lord. This is not about earning God's favour but about disciplining our bodies and learning to be attentive to the Spirit. There are many benefits of fasting, and for many years the church has fasted especially during Lent. Please do consider this and be asking the Lord what he is asking of you.
Finally please pray for the upcoming Alpha course, beginning on Wednesday 21st February in Bar 1331 on Grape Lane at 7.30pm. Please pray that women and men who are hungry for God would have their souls satisfied. Please pray that the Holy Spirit would open opportunities for you to invite people. Please pray for the team and the logistics. Please pray!
When we pray we seek God. We cry out to him. We trust him. We honour him. We humble ourselves before him. Only he has the power to turn our prayers into action. Only he is the answer to the longing of dissatsfied hearts. So let's use Lent to pray. To pray that the God of overflow would overflow.
