Dear Church Family
'Overflow' is our theme as we go into 2018. I'd like to encourage us all to be praying and working to see greater overflow of God's goodness into us and out of us in the coming year.
As we prepare and plan for this year, there are three things I'd like to invite us all do to.
First, please read the Overflow booklet. Copies were given out in St Michael le Belfrey Church last Sunday, and there'll be available this Sunday too. (You can also read online by clicking here).
Second, please pray. In particular please join us for our Evening of Prayer this coming Thursday (25th January) at 7.30pm in St Michael le Belfrey Church. At the end of that we'll begin 3 Days of Prayer and Fasting. When we fast we turn our physical hunger into hunger for God. We make space and instead of eating, we pray. Some will fast for the full three days whilst others will miss one meal per day. A few, who are unable to fast perhaps for health reasons, may choose to do something else, like not watch TV or use social media, making space to pray. Please use this time to pray for overflow - in your life and in the life of our church.
Third, please use this time to think about your giving. As we saw last Sunday when we looked at Jesus' words in Luke 6:38, overflow is often activated by giving. The start of a year is a good time to take stock of how and where we invest our time and energy and money. We're inviting the whole church to do this, and in particular for each of us to look at our financial giving to church. We're so grateful to everyone who is part of, and supports the work of The Belfrey. Renewing our financial giving is about planning our giving - something that the Bible tells us we should do. As you do this, please bear in mind that we're wanting as a church to express God's call to overflow by giving significant new money this year to help the poor - by helping a great community project overseas working with some of the poorest people on the planet, as well as sending Rosie Brabbs as a youth worker to Eastfield, and J & T abroad as mission partners working with refugees. So we're hoping that many of us will increase our giving this year to reflect these overflow plans. So as you pray, please be asking the Lord what he is asking of you in the coming year. Once you have decided, please complete a Pledge Form (from inside the Overflow booklets) and then return it to church, ideally on Sunday 28th January, or as soon as you can after that. (If you decide to leave your giving as it is, please still complete and return the form, as it is a great help to the church as we plan for the year ahead).
Our God is the God of overflow. He wants to fill us to overflowing with faith (Acts 6:5), hope (Romans 15:13) and love (1 Thessalonians 3:12) in the coming year. May we experience this overflow in York and the North in 2018.
